When I was in my thirties, serving as CEO at my first homeless shelter, I was invited to a Wednesday night youth Bible study in a small-town church. I expected a handful of kids. Instead, I walked into a room filled with about fifty teenagers—buzzing with energy, Bibles open, ready to engage. Amazing.

What made it even more remarkable was that most of the youth weren’t even from that church. In fact, the number of young people at the Bible study was larger than the church’s entire youth population.

Curious, I asked volunteers how this happened. One after another, they gave me the same answer: “It’s God’s blessing.” I’ll never forget that.

The message was simple, consistent, and contagious. Week after week, this teacher told people that what they were experiencing was God’s blessing—and that truth shaped the way others saw the ministry. That’s branding.

Branding Is More Than Marketing

Too many nonprofit leaders think of branding as logos, fonts, and clever slogans. But at its heart, branding is simply the consistent message you tell about what God is doing through your ministry.

For that small church youth group, the “brand” wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t about polished brochures or a website. Their brand was the repeated testimony: “This is God’s blessing.” That message drew people in. It helped them make sense of what they were experiencing and gave glory to God.

Your Message Shapes Discipleship

Branding, done well, is ministry. It disciples donors by reminding them of God’s faithfulness. It encourages staff by connecting their work to a bigger story. It testifies to your community that God is still at work.

That night in the small-town church, I learned a lesson I carry with me to this day: when we consistently tell the story of God’s blessing, people notice—and God multiplies the impact.
