As a Christian Leader of 25 Years, I’ve Learned There Is Always a Punchline

storybook

And when God tells the story, the ending is always good.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”— James 1:22

Comedians talk about the “two stories” behind every joke: the one you expect… and the one that surprises you.

Their punchline ends in laughter. But in ministry? There the punchline often comes wrapped in surrender, trust, and God’s unexpected provision.

After 25 years of Christian leadership, one truth stands out to me:

There is always a punchline—God’s punchline.
And it’s rarely the one I saw coming.

When God Does the Writing

Right now, you’re living inside your own story. Maybe you’re wondering how this year will finish, how next year will begin, whether the project will launch, or whether the budget will hold. Your mind is likely filling in the ending based on what you can see and know.

But Scripture calls us back to a deeper way: to walk by faith, not by sight.

Most of our anxiety isn’t about what we can control—it’s about what we can’t control:

The imagined endings.
The invisible obstacles.
The uncertainties that whisper louder than truth.

But here’s the part we forget: God has His own story.

Jesus teaches us this in the Lord’s Prayer:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done…”

He was pointing us toward the Father’s storyline—a story bigger, wiser, and far better than any we could imagine or write ourselves.

Paul’s Unexpected Punchline

Paul experienced this deeply.

The prophet Agabus warned Paul he would be bound and handed over as a prisoner. Everyone begged Paul to avoid Rome.

They saw danger.
They saw loss.
They saw a terrible ending. But Paul didn’t.

Why? Because he understood that two stories were unfolding:

  • The story his friends could see.
  • And the story God had prepared.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” — Ephesians 2:10

Paul wasn’t focused on the chains.
He was focused on the calling.
He trusted God’s punchline.

Learning to Trust the Better Story

If you’ve been in ministry long enough, you know:
  • The hits come.
  • The twists surprise you.
  • The story turns in directions you didn’t script.

This is why Christian leaders must learn how to take a punch—and still stand in faith.

Sometimes I picture God looking at us the way a loving father looks at a determined six-year-old trying to carry something too heavy:

“I’ve got this.” And He does.

There is always God’s story beneath the story we assume.

The Journey Is On

The Punchline of Faith

The next time you hear a comedian land a punchline you didn’t expect, remember:

There are always two stories—the one you assume or fear will take place, and the one God is writing.

And His punchline is always better.
